“I kissed A Girl I liked It” – Why “A Girl Kissing A Girl” astound most of us.

Madonna kissing Britney Spears At MTV Awards

What is this song about? I was curious to know the exact lyrics of “I Kissed A Girl” When I listened the song for the first time I thought it must be about Lesbians. But surprisingly, this song has nothing to do with lesbianism.

Go through the lyrics of “I Kissed A Girl” By Kate Perry from the Album One of the Boys

I kissed a girl I liked it

This was never the way I planned
Not my intention
I got so brave, drink in hand
Lost my discretion
It’s not what, I’m used to
Just wanna try you on
I’m curious for you
Caught my attention

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chapstick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don’t mean I’m in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

No, I don’t even know your name
It doesn’t matter,
You’re my experimental game
Just human nature,
It’s not what,
Good girls do
Not how they should behave
My head gets so confused
Hard to obey

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don’t mean I’m in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it,

Us girls we are so magical
Soft skin, red lips, so kissable
Hard to resist so touchable
Too good to deny it
Ain’t no big deal, it’s innocent

I kissed a girl and I liked it
The taste of her cherry chap stick
I kissed a girl just to try it
I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it
It felt so wrong
It felt so right
Don’t mean I’m in love tonight
I kissed a girl and I liked it
I liked it

  • The song “I Kissed A Girl” gained a great hype. I was just wondering that why “kissing a girl” is considered to be wrong? I was born and brought up in India where If a woman holds her girl-as-a-friend hands then people look suspiciously. Needless to say, their first presumption head towards thinking that Are they Lesbians?
  • I have traveled in a few foreign countries where I have seen girls kissing while greeting each other. Here I am not talking about just kissing on the cheeks. I am referring to lip-lip kiss. I myself don’t see anything wrong in it. But not many countries perceive this as something normal, it’s considered quite confrontational in many countries. Whenever you see girls kissing it will certainly turn few heads.
  • The latest incident that crops up in my mind is the incident of Madonna and Britney Spears kiss at the MTV Awards. It attracted a huge amount of celebrity buzz in the media. It gained a lot of criticism for Madonna and Britney Spears saying “it was an irresponsible act by them considering the fact that she is a mother and an ambassador of many charity organizations”. Is it a cultural shock for the old generation? I am sure your and my parents would definitely show their disgust to what Madonna and Britney Spears smooch incident at MTV Awards.
  • Can we accept a girl kissing a girl? I guess it will take ages to get in terms with clearly thinking that what’s right and wrong. The main motive of jotting down thoughts on this controversial topic is to express my acceptance on kissing your girl – as – a friend out of love, rather than categorizing it a lewd sexual act. Possibly, we need to come out of the shell of rigid cultural notions.

  1. Dear Hon,

Well I think that a lot of people when they re young try and experiment. The have no fear or sometimes no understanding of consequences as well. I also feel that they look at trends and fashion statement and sort of “go with the flow”. Though I think when you are young, you are a bit rebelious, so it sort of goes with it.
The other thing is that if a person is genuinely confused on his or her sexuality, then I think experimenting is maybe not a good idea. You have think hard and do some soul searching on who you are what you want in life. But whatever the end result, follow it!
The songs of kate perry or the desparate publicity stunt by Madonna works in the wrong direction. So guys/gals be careful, FIRSTLY – KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!

  2. I don’t quite agree to some of the observations.

    1. “I was born and brought up in India where If a woman holds her girl-as-a-friend hands then people look suspiciously.”

… this is only a very recent development and that too because we have started to perceive things through the (distorted) westerner’s eyes. It used to be quite the opposite. Holding hands with the same sex friends never used to be looked in a suspicious manner in India. In fact I have seen US cultural advisories for travelers to India which asked not to mistake boys holding hands of boys or girls holding hands of girls or hands on waists/shoulders of same-sex people as signs of homosexuality or lesbianism. The Lonely Planet travel advisory warns gay and lesbian tourists that “Physical contact between members of the same sex, such as holding hands, is commonplace in India and should not necessarily be taken as sexual.” In fact, this used to be quite natural for close friends and even these days older people do not seem to mind and do not cast a second glance for such intimacy. Its only a segment of the westernized younger generation which might be thinking in this way…but in my opinion, things are still different in India.

    2. Kissing as a form of greeting is a western phenomenon. In India, the only public kissing that we see are adults kissing young children on the cheek.

The lip-to-lip greeting kiss that in the west are mostly restricted to girls who are close friends. One hardly sees boys doing that. But one needs to distinguish this type of kiss from the Madonna-Britney type of kiss. The non-sexual lip-to-lip greeting kiss among girls in the west are brief in nature, with lips just touching lips…not the lingering variety that Madonna and Britney displayed. That’s the variety of kiss that “turns head”.

    3. As for the Madonna-Britney kiss, its just a publicity stunt that celebrities often indulge in. Of course there is a flavour of lesbianism in it…but they did it just to create the kind of controversy …and succeeded, because we still are talking about that.

4.”Can we accept a girl kissing a girl?”

Acceptance is a social phenomenon. The method and extent of acceptance is determined by the prevailing social norms.

As I explained above, in the west there is still a difference as per the prevailing norms in the manner of a girl-to-girl kissing as a greeting and a girl-to-girl kissing of the sexual-lesbian nature. Accepting one does not automatically result in accepting the other. Of course, as homosexuality is more and more accepted and tolerated in the society, the later type will be more acceptable in future.

    An interesting footnote:

A recent study on sexual response in human brain showed that heterosexual female response to heterosexual (woman-man) and homosexual sex (i.e. man/man and woman/woman) are largely similar and positive. In case of heterosexual male, the man-woman and woman-woman sex evoke positive response while man-man sex evokes revulsion.

That perhaps explains why non-lesbian women tend to be physically more “comfortable” with other women than a man is with another man. Social conditioning perhaps plays a role here too.

  3. That’s a great insight of your thoughts.
Yeah I agree Madonna and Britney was a publicity stunt.

All I want say is it all depends upon your attachment with the person, kissing is just one of the ways of expressing love; irrespective of the gender.

And one more thing- some days back Hubby and me went for a dinner. We were talking about how kissing on the hands is a polite gesture. I mean I don’t mind my hubby greeting a lady (mind it decent) by kissing on her hands. BUT BUT one thing which is important here is how the lady perceive the gesture? I know many girls who start taking things in the wrong ways.

One of my friend said “I will kill my husband if he will kiss any girl on her hands” !!!!!

Like I said “It all depends on who is kissing whom” Some men do it to flirt, some do it out of love and others just to show respect.

  4. “One of my friend said “I will kill my husband if he will kiss any girl on her hands” !!!!! ”

Kissing the hand used to be a method of greeting and profound respect, not of flirting ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand-kissing . It is rarer now even in the west.

When used out of context, like in India, it is perceived as a sort of flirting as your friend’s comment shows.

“I am in favor of preserving the French habit of kissing ladies’ hands – after all, one must start somewhere.” ~Sacha Guitry 😉
